What to Do When You Don’t See Your Continuing Education Hours Posted

March 19, 2020 By Ivy Hultquist 6 Comments

“My continuing education hours are not posted!”

It is incredibly frustrating when you purchase a continuing education course, complete it, and fail to see your hours posted to your DBPR license account once you try to renew.

Our job at FloridaCosmetologist.com is to make sure your completed continuing education hours are reported to the DBPR. And we like to have them reported quickly so you can renew your license as soon as possible, especially near the renewal deadline.

Florida rules require that approved continuing education providers electronically report completed hours within a certain time period. Normally it is 30 days, but it goes down to 10 days the month of the renewal, and by the 5th of the month after completion in some cases. Here is the Rule if you care to read it- 61G5-32.001 Continuing Education. (e)

And the application to become a cosmetology board continuing education provider states the below:

Providers must work with licensees to resolve reporting conflicts.

And that is why we are here today- to work with you to resolve this issue. We all make mistakes. While there are times where we do not get hours reported on our end, we often see the errors on the licensee’s end.

If your completed continuing education hours are not posted to your DBPR license account, here are some of the top reasons we see here at FloridaCosmetologist.com. Let’s troubleshoot!

How to Print Your License From the Florida Cosmetology Board

February 25, 2020 By Ivy Hultquist 23 Comments

After the renewal deadline this year, I received many emails asking why people had not received their renewal licenses in the mail. Maybe you are one of these people. I am here to tell you that you can stop checking your mailbox. Due to some changes, you will no longer receive a license in the mail- not when you apply and not when you renew. Instead of checking your mailbox, you will check your inbox after you complete a few steps.

As the world shifts to paperless-this and paperless-that, it was inevitable our professional licenses would join the movement. In July of 2019, the Department Business and Professional Regulation (DBRR) announced on the Florida Board of Cosmetology page that they were moving to paperless licensing. This means that people who apply for a new license can get their licenses in hand faster. In addition, the wait for a renewed license has been eliminated with this change. You can even print duplicate licenses if you work in multiple locations without a fee.

This applies to the following license types:

  • Cosmetologist
  • Nail Specialist
  • Facial Specialist
  • Full Specialist

Steps To Print Your License or Registration

If you follow these steps, you should have your printed license in your hands within a few minutes. Here we go!

New Florida Cosmetology Continuing Education Renewal Requirements

February 7, 2020 By Ivy Hultquist 9 Comments

***Please visit our Florida Continuing Education page for the most current requirements for license renewal. The below article has some outdated information.***

2020 was a crazy year. If any of you pay attention to the “hot topics” page on the Florida board of cosmetology’s website, you may have noticed a change in store for the 2020 and 2021 renewals. The Florida Cosmetology continuing education requirement for license and registration renewals decreased from 16 hours to 10 hours. This change was effective on February 6th, 2020, and applies to cosmetology, facial specialist, nail specialist, and full specialist licenses and registrations.

If you didn’t see it, don’t worry. Chances are, most people will not know about it until they get their license renewal notice in the mail late this summer.

Here is the announcement on the Florida Board of Cosmetology’s website:

Human Trafficking Awareness for Salon Professionals

August 6, 2019 By Ivy Hultquist Leave a Comment

I was washing my hands at the gas station and looked up at the corner of the mirror. A sticker with “Text BeFree” caught my eye. Chances are, you have seen it too. You might wonder why this is important to you as a cosmetologist, esthetician, or nail tech.

BeFree is a human trafficking hotline that can save lives. In California, a 14-year-old girl was able to save herself and two others by texting a crisis hotline and giving out her location. This led to the arrest of three traffickers in a sex trafficking ring.

In June, Florida took one big step this summer to help trafficking victims in a number of other ways. Governor DeSantis signed House Bill 851 to combat human trafficking. Currently, Florida ranks as the third-highest human trafficking destination in the country. This includes both labor and sex trafficking. The effective date of this Law was 7/1/2019.

Tips for Dealing With “No-Shows” in Your Salon

July 1, 2019 By Ivy Hultquist Leave a Comment

You glance at the clock. The client’s appointment was supposed to begin ten minutes ago. Are they coming? Should you call or text them just to see if they will be late (and throw off the rest of your day)? What about the missed income if they do not show?

Twenty minutes go by and nothing.

You take a deep breath and mark them down as a no-show.

Whether you are an independent booth renter or a salon owner, it can be so frustrating, disruptive, and sometimes infuriating when a client doesn’t show up.

Believe it or not, clients are not trying to ruin your day, business, or life by missing their appointment (even though it feels like it sometimes). Today, everyone (including your clients), live extremely busy and hectic lives. When too many tabs are open, things are bound to be missed and forgotten. This no-show issue is not a problem totally out of your control.

Thankfully, there are things you can do to help minimize the inconvenience and negative business impact a no-show creates.

How to Get Your Florida Nail Specialist License

June 7, 2019 By Ivy Hultquist 22 Comments

There are very few things people like more than a really good pedicure.

Because that pedicure is followed with a pair of flip flops and getting that perfect picture of their toes in the sand. You know the ones that I am talking about. Legs stretched out while sitting on the beach or by the pool by someone on vacation while we are all at work.

Nail specialists make that Instagram or Facebook post happen.

In order to provide those jealousy-invoking services, you need a nail specialist license in Florida. Whether you are already licensed as a nail tech in another state and moving to Florida, or just thinking about finding a nail specialist program, let’s get started on answering some common questions.
